AI as a means of Production

DRAAFT ONLY

Is there any equivalence between using ai to create an ad for a product on instagram and using it to create a work of art, a film or a photograph? This seems to be the issue at the heart of some artists' criticism of the ad.

So, first, let's here's a link to the ad:

Ok, so now let's look at one of the typical criticisms as a comment:

Do you really need an AI avatar for this post? I really like your site but this kind of post makes your platform feel less authentic ?? Why not get behind the camera, tell your story and share how you developed this cool platform. BTW Her wedding ring does a great job disappearing and reappearing again??

There appears to be two themes in the comments:

  • a platform with artists as the primary audience shouldn't use an AI generated ad or at least an avatar
  • an ad is subject to the same ethical constraints on the means of production as an ad

And there is one implicit threat in some of the comments:

  • the world of artists is unified and if you attack one you attack many, so don't employ AI because it is destroying our livelihood.

The facts are a little more in the grey zone:

  • artists objecting to an ai avatar on one post in Instagram is kind of odd because there is so much AI employed on the platform
  • an ad is not pretending to be a creative work of art made by a human
  • it is unrealistic to ask for a human actor to replace an avatar on a post for us
