Artists of any age, nationality and experience who create art relating to the natural world can enter the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize. The subject for the prize is 'natural science'. 

The prize was established in 2003 and is named after the first curator of the South Australian Museum, Frederick Waterhouse. Any form of visual fine art that relates to the natural world is eligible for the Waterhouse Prize, with the exception of photography.

  • First prize (acquisitive) receives $30,000
  • Emerging Artist Prize - $10,000
  • Scientists’ Award prize of $5,000
  • the People's Choice prize is $5,000
