2015 will present the most significant developments in Strand Ephemera’s history; building on both the event’s capacity to encourage and showcase the work of north Queensland’s talented artists, as well as enhancing its reputation as a signature arts event. Firstly, the exhibition will be held earlier than the customary September showing. This move will align the event with another significant cultural festival, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. To learn more about this event, visit: www.afcm.com.au Combined, Strand Ephemera, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, and a host of other Fringe Events will see Townsville transformed into a hive of arts and cultural experiences to intrigue and delight residents and visitors alike. The shift in dates is also made in an attempt to reduce the impact of the strengthening September winds on artworks placed along The Strand. Secondly, successful Strand Ephemera applicants will receive greater financial support from Gallery Services and its sponsors in 2015. With a view to allowing artists to engage with a broader range of materials, processes, and to achieve greater scale and impact through their works, the Artist Fee provided to develop selected proposals will be raised from $1,000 in 2013 to $5,000. Finally, there will be a greater diversity of artworks in 2015, as Gallery Services engage with some of the nation’s leading 3-D chalk artists and large-scale sand sculptors to produce works throughout the event, as well as curating a selection of non-competitive artworks to feature in the exhibition. The increase in curated content translates to a more competitive Strand Ephemera than ever before, with between 20-25 selected Proposals from artists to ultimately compete for the major $10,000 Award for Artistic Excellence.
