The New Light Prize Exhibition is an open art competition for all artists who were born in, or currently live, or studied an art-based degree in the historic authorities of Cheshire, Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland or Yorkshire & The Humber (see rules & guidelines below for further entry criteria).
Each Prize Exhibition will have a new judging panel of art experts who will shortlist artworks without seeing artist names. This allows both emerging and established artists to be judged without bias. The exhibition will tour four Northern venues and one London gallery.
Eligibility:
Open to all artists who were born in the North of England or are currently living in the North of England or studied at degree or postgraduate level (in an arts-based subject) in the North of England.
Entrants can be at any stage in their career; there is no upper age restriction, but we do ask for entrants to be over 18 when entries close.
PRIZES:
Several awards are on offer: The New Light Valeria Sykes Prize – open to all shortlisted artists. The winning artwork is selected by a guest judging panel.
- The prize-winner will recieve £10,000 plus a year’s mentorship from the previous winner.
- The New Light Patron’s Choice Award – open to all shortlisted artists. The winning artwork is selected by our patron, Valeria Sykes. The prize-winner will receive £2,500.
- The New Light Emerging Artist Prize (sponsored by The Saul Hay Gallery) – open to all shorlisted artists who have been practising art for less than 3 years. The prize -winner will be offered a solo show at the Saul Hay Gallery, Manchester.
- The New Light Printmakers Prize (sponsored by The Zillah Bell Gallery) – open to all shortlisted artists who have entered an original print. The prize-winner(s) will be offered a solo/group show
- The New Light Purchase Prize – open to all shortlisted artists. New Light will buy one artwork (commission-free) to add to the New Light Collection.
- The New Light Visitors’ Choice Award (sponsored by TIG) – open to all shortlisted artists. Visitors will vote for their favourite artwork at each northern gallery. The 4 prize-winners will each receive 100 postcards of their winning piece, printed by TIG.
