Believing that the glory years of the Art Nouveau period can be rejuvenated, modernised and re-visited, over the past six years Kirra Galleries have held an annual exhibition of illuminated glass with handmade, one-off pieces of modern Australian glass art. KIGA (Kirra Illuminating Glass Award) is an extension of this exhibition, further recognising the excellence of glass making and skill and creativity in illuminating a piece. Glass artists are invited to design works faithful to their individual style, but unlike normal glass artworks, have the added feature of being internally illuminated. The KIGA first prize of $15,000 is awarded for the best internally lit glass sculpture. There will also be an Innovation Award of $3000 for the most innovative entry. The winners of both awards will be announced on Wednesday 1 June 2016 and the shortlisted entries will be exhibited as part of Fed Square’s Light in Winter program in June 2016.
