The prize is awarded, in the opinion of the judges, for the best contemporary religious art work submitted by an emerging professional artist. The John Coburn Emerging Professional Artist Award is strictly non-sectarian.

John Coburn came to prominence as an artist through winning the 1960 Blake Prize for Religious Art. This enabled him to begin a professional career as an artist. John went on to make a major contribution to Australian visual culture and is remembered for his paintings, design, and tapestries including the curtains for the Sydney Opera House.

Fees: Entry fee is $50 per work and there is a 30% commission on sales.
