Australia's oldest art award. Named after Jules Francois Archibald (nee John Feltham Archibald) (1856 - 1919). An award that has seen controversy throughout the years. It is an annual portrait prize of $100,000. Artists are required to paint the portrait from life and are requested to provide a statement signed by the subject that they had at least one sitting with the artist.

Applicants must have been resident in Australasia for a period of 12 months prior to the closing date.

This is not an acquisitive award.

The Archibald Prize is judged by the gallery trustees.

All artists selected as finalists for the Archibald Prize will receive an artist loan fee. This ensures that each finalist will be compensated for their contributions, with a $1,000 fee for their work's inclusion in the exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW).
