‘Wootha’ is a local Kabi Kabi / Gubbi Gubbi name for Red Cedar, a beautiful tree that grew in the subtropical rainforests which once dominated Maleny, the Blackall Ranges and much of the East Coast of Australia.

The Wootha Prize, Australia's only themed woodworking competition, is open to woodworkers and artists working in timber. The 2017 theme is "Inside Out". The theme is open to artistic interpretation and all entries must be made from sustainably harvested native timbers from native forests or plantations, weed or recycled timbers. Other materials may be used in conjunction with timber.

The prize is 'open themed' in 2024.

Entries may be contemporary to traditional in design and may be functional or sculptural. The Wootha Prize offers wood artisans the opportunity to showcase their work to the thousands of visitors who flock to the Maleny Wood Expo each year.
